Memories of thirty years ago : carbon copy of typescript, [undated].

Reminiscence of Tupper's experiences as a sailor from the age of 15 in 1859 to ca. 1862, aboard a variety of ships with different destinations and cargoes. The narrative begins with his first journey aboard his uncle's packet ship, the Western Empire, from Boston to New Orleans, then Liverpool. After traveling back and forth to New Orleans and Liverpool, he returned to Boston in Aug. 1860. In Sept., he embarked on a newly-constructed bark, the Fruiter, to Malaga, Spain, then on to San Francisco via Cape Horn. He arrived in San Francisco in 1861. Tupper then ships off on a charter to Yokohama, and from there to Nagasaki, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Foo Chow (Fuzhou), and other ports of call in Japan and China. He describes each of these places in turn, with particular attention to Nagasaki. He also describes being wrecked by a steamer, and his subsequent rescue a few days later, aboard a Dutch ship, the George Hendric. Tupper then recounts his sailing experiences aboard this ship, then subsequent experiences aboard an American ship, the Black Prince, and finally, aboard the Helios, bound for San Francisco. In the final pages, Tupper describes his life in Calif., cutting hay in the San Joaquin Valley, and eventually settling on a friend's ranch and raising a family.
